Auto Repair Shop Pollution Prevention
As part of the Healthy Air for North Denver (HAND) project, Groundwork Denver has been working with small auto repair shops to improve health and safety conditions for workers and to help them make changes to become better environmental neighbors to the local community. The project was based on the Boston Safe Shops program with input and guidance from Denver Environmental Health. The three biggest issues found at the shops were lack of Material Safety Data Sheets that inform workers about the hazardous substances they work with, poor handling of used fluids, and general lack of shop cleanliness. The participating shops worked with Groundwork Denver to make improvements in these and other areas. Several shops now participate in free waste oil recycling programs. We're seeking grant funding to continue this promising pilot program.
