Photovoice: Elyria Swansea Neighborhood Plan
We worked with a group of youth at the Cross Community
Coalition and a group of monolingual Spanish-speaking women who were
participating in the Swansea Elementary Summer Scholars Program. They
were asked for input on a new plan for the neighborhood that the City
is working on. Participants presented their concerns, including industrial
odors, garbage, unpaved alleys, dangerous train crossings, and grafitti
and security, to city planners.

All
the trains near the parks are an issue because people
can’t hear and also people can’t
sleep.

The fence is there but kids still jump over it. There are kids
that jump over and play on the train tracks and get hurt. Maybe they
can make a higher fence or cement wall.

The smell from the Purina factory is horrible at 42nd Avenue between
Vine and Gaylord Streets. The neighborhood is dirty.

The train passes and does not let the bus pass or the people cross
the train tracks. The train does not have a fixed hour when it passes
and it is very dirty.

The trash in the alley behind the Valdez Perry branch of the library
is an issue because it looks bad for the neighborhood. Also, it causes
health problems for people. It is necessary to have dumpsters and fine
people who continue to put trash in inappropriate places.
